Renovation Debris 101: What Contractors Need to Know Before They Book
A practical debris-planning guide for contractors working in Owensboro and Daviess County.
Renovation Debris 101 starts here: debris planning is easy to treat as an afterthought until it slows down a job. Contractors who plan container size and swap-out timing before the first demo day tend to keep crews working instead of waiting on a full dumpster mid-project.
Renovation Debris 101: Plan Before Demo Day
Before your crew shows up, know roughly how much material is coming out, what type it is, and where the container needs to sit. A few minutes of planning avoids a container arriving too small, too late, or in the wrong spot on day one.
- Confirm driveway or job site access for delivery before booking
- Estimate debris volume by project scope, not just square footage
- Separate heavy material (concrete, tile) from light debris in your estimate
- Confirm whether a permit applies if the container needs street placement
Sizing by Project Phase
Demolition typically generates the most debris fastest, while finish work generates less but over a longer period. If your project has distinct phases with different debris rates, a single fixed-size container for the whole job is often the wrong approach – see our Long-Term & Recurring Rental page for scheduled swap-outs that match debris pace instead.
When to Use Swap-Out Service
If your project will fill more than one container over its timeline, scheduled swap-outs keep debris moving off-site continuously instead of holding the job up while you book a new rental each time a container fills.
Renovation Debris 101: How Much Swap-Out Notice Do You Need?
Same-day or next-day swaps are usually possible depending on our schedule – call ahead when you know a container is close to full so we can plan the pickup and next delivery together.
Weight vs. Volume for Mixed Debris
This part of renovation debris 101 trips people up most: a renovation often mixes light material (drywall, wood trim) with heavy material (tile, concrete, old fixtures). Sizing purely by volume without accounting for weight is the most common way contractors end up with overage fees – see our Concrete & Heavy Debris page for more on weight-based sizing.
Container Sizing by Trade
The trade tells us most of what we need to size a container, because each one produces a different mix of volume and weight.
- Demolition and gut remodels: drywall, plaster, framing and flooring. Whole-house remodels usually land on a 20- or 30-yard, and a full teardown can call for a 40-yard with swaps along the way.
- Framing and new construction: lumber scraps, drywall offcuts and packaging fill space quickly but stay light. A 30- or 40-yard is common on larger builds.
- Roofing: shingles are heavy, so a 20-yard fits most single-story tear-offs and a 30-yard covers larger or multi-layer roofs. Our roofing page explains the weight side.
- Concrete, brick and dirt: these reach the weight limit before the container looks full, so they often go in a smaller container even on a big job. See the heavy debris guide.
- Landscaping and site clearing: brush and limbs are bulky and light, soil and sod are the opposite. A 10- to 20-yard covers most yard work.
If a job has two phases with very different materials, such as demolition followed by finish work, plan a container for each phase instead of one oversized box.
What to Tell Us When You Call
A few details let us give a firm size and price on the first call:
- The job-site address and where the container can sit
- The phase of the job and the main materials coming out
- Driveway width, overhead wires, and whether the only option is the street
- Your start date and how long you expect the phase to last
- Whether you expect to fill it fast enough to need a swap
If the container has to go on a public street, review the permit requirements before delivery day. Several trades can share one container on a busy site as long as there is a single billing contact.
Short-Notice Needs on a Job Site
Demo that finishes early or a container that fills sooner than planned happens on most jobs. We can sometimes deliver or swap the same day, depending on routes and which containers are free, but we do not promise it and set no fixed cutoff. Call early in the day with the size and the address. For repeat swaps, a scheduled plan beats waiting for the container to overflow. See same-day delivery and the long-term rental page.
A Quick Reminder on What Stays Out
Paint, solvents, batteries, fuels and other hazardous or flammable material cannot go in any container, and asbestos-containing material needs separate handling. Check the accepted items guide before a crew loads something unfamiliar, since removing a rejected item after the fact costs more time than asking first.
