Courthouse-square planning

A county seat holds county offices, legal practices and small businesses, and those buildings change hands. An office cleanout usually fits a 15-yard. If the container needs to sit on the square, see the permit page, and avoid court days.

Older houses

With homes dating from the 19th century, Dixon’s repairs involve old roofs, rotted porches and plaster. Weight can climb quickly, so check the weight page before filling a 10-yard with plaster.

A family clears a historic house before selling. Furniture, carpet and cabinets fill a 20-yard at $400 to $550.

A WPA courthouse

The Webster County Courthouse on Courthouse Square is a three-story poured-concrete building in the Moderne style, designed by Lawrence Casner and built in 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project. It measures 56 by 100 feet and was listed on the National Register on August 8, 1991.

History tied to the road

In 1794 William Jenkins opened a stagecoach inn on the old Indian trail between Nashville and St. Louis, five miles north of the present town. In 1799 the Harpe brothers, outlaws, murdered a family near present-day Dixon. The crossroads that US 41A and KY 132 still form is why the town grew where it did.

County population

Webster County’s population peaked at 20,974 in 1910 and was 13,017 in 2020. Dixon itself grew from 632 in 2000 to 786 in 2010 and 933 in 2020, which is the opposite of the county trend and suggests ongoing building and renovation.
