What Can and Cannot Go in a Dumpster: What Is Always Accepted
General household junk, furniture, boxes, clothing, toys, non-hazardous garage items, yard waste (branches, brush, leaves), carpet and flooring, drywall, and most remodeling debris are accepted in every size dumpster we offer.
Accepted With Conditions
For what can and cannot go in a dumpster in this category: concrete, brick, block, asphalt, and dirt are accepted but priced and sized by weight, not volume – tell us the approximate quantity when you book. Mattresses and box springs are generally fine but some disposal facilities charge a per-item fee; ask when booking. Large appliances are accepted if they do not contain refrigerant (see the appliances section below).
Can I put dirt or sod in a dumpster?
In smaller amounts, yes. Dirt and sod are heavy, so a large quantity needs to be sized by weight rather than treated like general yard debris – mention it when you book.
Never Accepted – Hazardous Materials
These items are prohibited in every dumpster size, regardless of project type, and require separate disposal through your local hazardous waste program:
- Paint, stains, and solvents (liquid form)
- Motor oil, gasoline, and other fuels
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Asbestos-containing material
- Medical or biohazard waste
- Propane tanks and pressurized cylinders
What happens if hazardous material is found in my dumpster?
Disposal facilities inspect loads, and hazardous material found in a container can delay pickup or trigger additional fees. If you are unsure whether something qualifies, ask before it goes in rather than after.
Appliances & Electronics
Most household appliances are accepted. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning units containing refrigerant typically need refrigerant removed (Freon reclamation) before disposal – ask us about this when booking, as it may need to be arranged separately. Standard electronics like TVs and computers are often accepted but may be restricted at some facilities – confirm when you book if your load includes a large volume of electronics.
Tires, Batteries & Fluids
Car batteries and other batteries containing hazardous chemicals are not accepted in a standard dumpster – most auto parts stores accept these for free. Tires are often excluded or limited to a small quantity; ask before including tires in your load. Any container holding liquid fluids should be emptied and the fluid disposed of separately before the container itself goes in the dumpster.
Construction & Demolition Materials
Framing lumber, drywall, flooring, roofing shingles, siding, and general demolition debris are accepted and are the most common loads on our Construction Dumpster Rental and Demolition Debris Removal pages. Asbestos-containing material from older homes is the main exception – if your home was built before the 1980s and you are unsure about insulation, siding, or flooring material, have it tested before demolition rather than assuming it is safe to include.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Can and Cannot Go in a Dumpster When Mixing Material Types?
Yes, mixed loads are normal and do not need to be sorted by material type, as long as everything is accepted material and the load stays under the container weight limit.
Will I be charged extra if I include a prohibited item by accident?
It depends on the item and the facility. Ask us upfront if you are unsure about anything – it is always better to confirm before loading than risk a fee or delayed pickup after the fact.
